Speakers

This year we focus on product development with two presentations: Shainin Red X by Bob Lloyd, Lean Six Sigma Expert, and Product Innovation by Pete Geleta and Rich Miller from the Dupont Building Innovations Unit at DuPont

Shainin Red X

Red X is an approach to solving problems developed by Dorian Shainin. Shainin’s Red X started as an approach to solving engineering problems but its principles are used for solving business process problems as well. Its principles are straight forward:

  • Pareto (the 80/20 rule)
  • Fact based decision making
  • Convergent strategies

·         What is Red X® Reliability?

Reliability is a step beyond quality, waaay beyond, but economical. Quality is defined as when the customer is enthusiastic about the new product he or she has just purchased. Reliability is when the customer is so enthusiastic about the great product, even after it is worn out (and he/she wants to buy another one). If an engineer is to be sure his/her product will be reliable he/she must know that the Red X's that control each of the product's critical technical characteristics (CTRs) are set to the right levels and that the product's manufacturing system keeps the CTRs there.

Bob Lloyd began work at Motorola in 1978 where he led efforts in breaking the Japanese trade barrier in electronics, beating all competitors in quality, cost, performance and delivery to become the largest seller of pagers in Japan. As Director of Product Reliability, he created a 1-Week ALT that simulated 5 yrs of product life that proactively reduced failure rates and time-to-market for over $200 million in benefits. Bob now runs his own consulting firm, specializing in training and deployment of Six Sigma, Lean and Shainin Methods. He holds an MBA, a Masters Certification in HRM (Org Dev), a BSME, a CMQ/OE, a CSSBB and is a Certified Lean Sensei. Bob is also the recipient of 13 US patents.

Product Innovation

Innovation is a core process for any business that needs to grow.  Pete Geleta and Rich Miller will discuss their efforts to build an innovation process based upon Six Sigma in the Building Innovations business unit of DuPont.  The will share key learnings and the pitfalls that accompany Six Sigma deployments in the inner space where marketing, research and manufacturing come together.

Pete Geleta is the Six Sigma Champion for the Building Innovations Strategic Business Unit of the DuPont Company.

Building Innovations enables Architects, Designers and Building Owners to create beautiful buildings which are both

sustainable and economical. Familiar brands include Corian®, Zodiaq® and Tyvek®.

Pete is responsible for Six Sigma implementation and for the processes that drive strategic planning and execution

to achieve business goals. Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) is used to understand market needs; translate those needs

into new products; and to maximize customer service while minimizing cost. Six Sigma is enhancing an execution

culture that focuses on reliably meeting commitments.  Pete has been with DuPont for 30 years. He has held leadership

positions in Technology, Manufacturing, Sales, Marketing and Product Management. Pete started the Six Sigma portion

of his career in 2002 as a Black Belt. He became a Master Black Belt in 2004 and moved to his current role in 2006.

He has completed many successful projects that have delivered tens of millions of dollars of validated earnings.

Pete earned a Bachelors Degree and a Masters Degree in Chemical Engineering in 1980 from Drexel University.

He received a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Memphis in 1984.

Rich Miller began his career with the DuPont Company in 1991 earning his doctorate in Chemical Engineering at Michigan Technological University in 1994.   Rich has published papers in paint spray atomization, holds a patent for solid surface materials containing synthetic mica, and is married with a family of 2 loving children living in Bear, DE- of which he is the most proud.   Rich completed his first Six Sigma green belt project in 2003, earned his Black Belt certification in 2007, and completed his Master Black Belt certification in 2008.  Today he is an advocate of Stage-Gated Six Sigma on large complex projects, serving as Innovation Process Champion & Master Black Belt for New Product Development, Improvement, and Lean processes in the Building Innovations Business. Rich is also an Assistant Scout Master for the Boy Scouts of America, an avid barefoot water skier, and a licensed chemical engineer in the State of Michigan.
